Classic Ford Specialists in Milton Keynes

Bodywork, Restoration & Paintwork for Escorts, Capris, Cortinas & More

“Classic Fords were the gateway drug. Escorts, Capris, a battered old Cortina here and there. I was hooked.”

Top Touch Coachworks is my classic Ford specialist workshop, based in Wicken, just outside Milton Keynes. I offer expert bodywork restoration, structural repairs, custom resprays, and panel fabrication for classic and retro Ford models.

From Mk1 Escorts to Capri Brooklands, Sierra Cosworths to RS2000s — if it wears a blue oval, chances are I’ve worked on one, owned one, or spent my weekends admiring one at Ford Fair.

★★★★★
“Alex took my Capri on even though he was busy — he worked so many hours above and beyond to complete the restoration. He listened to my needs, understood what was needed, and added ideas I hadn’t thought of. His work ethic is superb, his attention to detail is so sharp. The finished product was more than I had hoped for and allowed me a few really enjoyable and proud months of ownership. It drew club show and national magazine attention.

A Lifelong Passion for Classic Fords

Alex Cox filming his 1998 Ford Escort GTI for the 2 Skint 2 Scrap YouTube channel
Filming the Escort GTI for my YouTube channel, 2 Skint 2 Scrap.

My obsession with classic Fords started long before Top Touch Coachworks existed. Growing up, weekends meant garages, grease, and pulling things apart to see how they worked. The cars that caught my eye were always the same — Ford Escorts, Capris, and Cortinas. The kind of cars that filled the car parks at local shows and the pages of Practical Classics and Classic Ford magazine.

That early passion shaped everything that came after. While other lads moved on to newer motors, I kept going back to the blue oval. Learning to weld on rotten Escort sills. Figuring out how to get a Pinto engine running properly. Spending entire winters underneath cars that most people would have sent to the crusher.

That hands-on education — years of doing things the hard way, on a budget, with second-hand tools — is what makes the work at Top Touch different from a typical bodyshop. I don’t just repair classic Fords. I understand them. I know where they rust, how the panels are supposed to sit, what the factory lines should look like, and what shortcuts to avoid.

Ford Fair — Every Year, Without Fail

Alex Cox's Ford Escort GTI at Ford Fair, Silverstone — classic Ford show
My Escort GTI at Ford Fair, Silverstone — I go every year.

Ford Fair at Silverstone is the UK’s biggest annual Ford-only event, and I’ve been going for as long as I can remember. It’s not just a day out — it’s where the Ford community comes together. Thousands of classic and modified Fords in one place, from concours Mk1 Escorts to wild turbocharged Cosworths.

I take my own Escort GTI every year. It’s a chance to catch up with fellow enthusiasts, see the standard of work being done across the country, and stay connected with the community that fuels my passion. Several of my customers are people I first met at Ford Fair or through Ford-specific forums and Facebook groups.

Being part of the Ford community isn’t just a hobby — it directly informs the work I do. I know what Ford owners expect because I am one. I know the difference between a show-standard finish and a “that’ll do” respray because I’ve walked past hundreds of both at Silverstone every July.

My Personal Fords

1998 Ford Escort GTI — Alex Cox's personal classic Ford, restored and daily driven
My 1998 Escort GTI — rescued from a bush, rebuilt by hand, driven every day.

The best way to judge a classic Ford specialist is to look at what they drive themselves. My daily driver is my 1998 Ford Escort GTI — a car I found abandoned in a bush in London. It hadn’t moved in years and had failed its MOT with extensive rot.

The floors were gone. The rear arches were gone. The bottoms of the wings needed replacing, and the boot floor needed cutting out. Most people would have walked away. I bought it anyway because it still had a decent 1.8 Zetec in it and I could see what it could become.

I spent four months welding it back together — over Christmas, in the snow, because that’s when I had time. The engine has been through three bottom ends since the rebuild. The current setup is a fully rebuilt 2.0 Zetec with new crank, pistons, and rods. Brakes were upgraded to 300mm Mondeo calipers with Focus ST discs up front, retaining full ABS.

It’s not a garage queen. It’s not a trailer car. It drives to the workshop in Wicken every single day and goes to Ford Fair every summer. That’s the approach I bring to every classic Ford that comes through the door — build it properly, and actually use it.

Classic Ford Restoration Services

Every classic Ford that arrives at Top Touch gets the same treatment — a thorough assessment, an honest conversation about what’s needed, and work done to the highest standard. My services for classic Ford owners include:

  • Full bare-metal restoration — strip, assess, repair, prime, paint, and reassemble
  • Structural welding and fabrication — sills, floors, arches, boot floors, inner wings, scuttle panels
  • Hand-fabricated replacement panels — using shrinker/stretcher, sandbag, hammers and dollies to recreate factory lines
  • Custom resprays — original colours, period-correct finishes, or custom colour changes
  • Bodywork and panel repairs — dents, scratches, stone chips, filler removal, and panel alignment
  • Rust treatment and prevention — cavity wax, seam sealer, Bilt Hamber protection
  • Paint correction and detailing — multi-stage wet sanding and polishing for a factory-fresh finish

I work alone, by choice. That means every weld, every block-sand, every coat of paint is done by the same pair of hands. No passing your classic Ford to a junior. No corners cut to hit a deadline. Just me, your car, and however long it takes to do it right.

Why Ford Owners Choose Top Touch

There are other bodyshops. There are even a few other places that claim to specialise in classic Fords. So why do Ford enthusiasts across Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, and beyond bring their cars to me?

  • A Ford owner, not just a Ford repairer — I own, drive, and show classic Fords myself. I understand what matters to enthusiasts because I am one.
  • Proven results — the Capri Brooklands restoration drew club show and national magazine attention. The Escort GTI was rebuilt from a write-off into a reliable daily driver.
  • One man, one car — you deal with me directly. I assess it, quote it, and do the work myself. No middlemen, no surprises.
  • Transparent process — I document my builds on my YouTube channel and send progress photos via WhatsApp throughout your project.
  • Fair, honest pricing — no inflated quotes, no hidden extras. You’ll know what’s involved before any work starts.

Ford Models I Specialise In

Over two decades of working on classic and retro Fords, I’ve built up specialist knowledge across the full range of models that Ford enthusiasts love. Whether it’s a full bare-metal restoration or targeted rust repair and a respray, these are the models I work on most:

Ford Escort (Mk1 – Mk6)

The Escort is the car that started it all for me — and it’s still the model I see most often in the workshop. From Mk1 Escort shells needing complete structural rebuilds to Mk5/Mk6 Escorts with tired bodywork and rusty arches, I handle every generation. My own daily driver is a 1998 Ford Escort GTI that I rescued from a bush in London and rebuilt from the ground up — new floors, rear arches, wing bottoms, and a fully rebuilt 2.0 Zetec engine.

Ford Capri (Mk1 – Mk3)

The Ford Capri holds a special place at Top Touch. My most recognised project to date is the 1986 Ford Capri 2.8i Brooklands — a full structural restoration that took over 150 hours from bare shell to finished car. The work involved cutting out rot from the sills, floors, boot floor, and scuttle panel, hand-fabricating replacement panels, and finishing in custom VW blue metallic. It went on to draw club show and national magazine attention.

Ford Cortina

Mk3 and Mk4 Cortinas are becoming increasingly sought-after, and finding someone who knows how to work on them properly is getting harder. I’ve been around Cortinas since my earliest days in the garage and understand the common rust traps — inner wings, boot floors, door skins, and the notorious A-post drainage channels.

Ford Sierra & Sierra Cosworth

The Sierra Cosworth is one of the most iconic performance Fords ever made — and values have risen sharply in recent years. Bodywork quality matters enormously on these cars, whether you’re repairing stone chips and lacquer peel or undertaking a more significant restoration. I treat every Sierra with the care its value demands.

Ford RS Models (RS2000, RS Turbo, RS1600i)

RS-badged Fords attract serious money and serious scrutiny. Owners need a specialist who understands that panel gaps, paint finish, and attention to detail are everything on these cars. My background in high-end classic Ford bodywork means your RS model is in hands that appreciate what it’s worth — both financially and historically.

Other Classic & Retro Fords

I also work on Ford Anglias, Ford Populars, Transit Mk1/Mk2s, Fiestas (XR2, RS Turbo), and Ford Mondeos. If it’s a Ford and it needs bodywork, welding, or paint — get in touch. Chances are I’ve worked on one before.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a classic Ford restoration cost?

Every project is different. A targeted rust repair and respray on an Escort might be a few hundred pounds; a full bare-metal Capri restoration can run into several thousand. I’ll assess your car, explain exactly what’s needed, and give you an honest quote with no hidden costs. Send photos via WhatsApp for a free initial assessment.

Do you work on modern Fords as well?

Yes. While classic and retro Fords are my passion, I handle bodywork, resprays, and repairs on all makes and models — including modern Fords like the Focus, Fiesta, and Mondeo. The same attention to detail applies regardless of the car’s age.

Can you source parts for my classic Ford?

I’ve built up a strong network of parts suppliers over 20+ years. For common models like the Escort and Capri, reproduction panels and parts are generally available. For rarer models, I can hand-fabricate panels using traditional metalwork techniques — shrinker/stretcher, sandbag, hammers and dollies — to recreate factory-correct fitment.

How long does a classic Ford restoration take?

Timescales depend on the scope of work. A panel repair and localised respray might take a few days. A full structural restoration like the Capri Brooklands took 150+ hours over several weeks. I’ll give you a realistic timeline upfront and keep you updated with progress photos throughout.

Do you prepare classic Fords for shows?

Absolutely. Whether you’re aiming for a concours finish at a Ford owners’ club event, preparing for Ford Fair at Silverstone, or just want your car looking its best for a local meet, I can help. My paint correction and polishing process — working through up to seven grit stages — delivers a finish that stands up to the closest scrutiny.

Is my classic Ford too far gone to save?

I have a saying: “too skint to scrap it, so you fix it instead.” My own Escort GTI was dragged out of a bush with rotted floors and failed its MOT. The Capri Brooklands had rust through the sills, floors, boot floor, and scuttle panel. Both came back to life. If the shell is structurally viable, there’s usually a way forward. Send photos and I’ll give you an honest opinion.

Got a Classic Ford That Needs Work?

Send me some photos on WhatsApp — I’ll give you an honest assessment of what’s needed, what it’ll cost, and how long it’ll take. No obligation, no hard sell. Just one Ford enthusiast talking to another.
